Could You Save Thousands on Solar Battery Storage?

Could you save thousands on solar battery storage - Labour's cheaper home battery program explained

Labour’s Proposed $2.3 Billion “Cheaper Home Batteries Program” Explained

As part of the upcoming federal election in Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced plans for a $2.3 billion initiative aimed at cutting the cost of home battery systems by up to 30%, helping more Australians maximise their solar investment and lower energy bills.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program, if legislated and rolled out from July 1, 2025, would deliver significant financial incentives for households, small businesses, and community organisations looking to invest in energy storage.

Program Highlights

Financial Incentive:
Eligible participants under the Cheaper Home Batteries scheme could receive a $4,000 upfront discount on a typical battery installation.  This could see households that have existing solar save up to $1,100 on energy bills per annum, and for households installing a brand new solar system with battery – those savings could be more in the realms of $2,300 per annum.

Who’s Eligible:

At present, the eligibility criteria for the scheme is light in terms of details, but we know that these 3 groups will be included:

  • Households
  • Small businesses
  • Community facilities

Delivery Mechanism:
The scheme will be administered by the Clean Energy Regulator under the proven Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which has successfully subsidised solar panels and hot water systems in Australia for years.

Start Date:
If Anthony Albanese is elected, this could start as early as July 1, 2025.  → Coverage from Daily Telegraph

What’s in it for you?

Huge Cost Savings:

  • Homes with existing solar could save up to $1,100/year
  • New solar + battery installs might save up to $2,300/year – up to 90% off electricity bills

Environmental Benefits:
At it’s simplest – Improved energy storage options = more efficient solar use = reduced carbon emissions.  This move supports the national goal of 82% renewable energy by 2030, and a greener future for us all.

Grid Stability Potential:
Proper battery integration could ease the strain on the national energy grid and support a more resilient energy future.  That’s a win for everyone!
